The Article
When I was tasked with writing a feature article about a Carnegie Mellon University alum, I reached out to my second cousin. I took a professional approach, did as much research as I could, and crafted interview questions pertinent to the angle I planned to pursue. After the first draft of the article, I discovered an angle that I had not anticipated, so I conducted a follow-up interview. The second interview culminated in a major overhaul of the article, but I am very pleased with the final result, which draws a connection across three generations of Carnegie students.
The Layout
Later, I was tasked with creating magazine spreads and I chose to use this article because I had so many lovely images sent to me by my cousin. Part of the assignment was to create the spreads so they fit within the ethos of an existing publication. I chose The Atlantic as my target magazine, so I emulated some of the design elements from published articles and used that title in the folio of the spreads.
